Turkey-Russia agenda addresses also Armenia's interests – analyst

14:40 • 02.10.17

The developing relations between Ankara and Moscow cannot remain beyond the scope of Armenia's attention, Styopa Safaryan, Director of the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs, said today, commenting on the recent meeting between the Turkish and Russian leaders.

“What Russia is trying to do is to take advantage of Turkey's insults, i.e. - the problems between Turkey and the US on the one hand, and Turkey and the EU on the other. Russia is attempting to attract Turkey to its side, undermining the West. In this sense, the Putin-Erdogan agenda was really very enriched, as they discussed a plan for creating de-escalation zones in Syria. Yet I believe that Turkey's concern was not only the situation in Syria but also the Kurdistan referendum that entailed undesirable developments for Turkey,” he told reporters.

Referring to high-ranking Turkish officials' earlier statements threatening a punitive action against the referendum organizers, Safaryan he sees the possibility of indirect hazards by Turkey.

“We don’t know if Turkey’s actions will target Syria or Iraq, but Turkey definitely has only choice at the moment – to use the groups it used during the civil war in the Islamic State or Syria. So we have to wait for such kind of developments despite the warning by the United States or other countries,” he added.

The analyst further highlighted the two countries’ coinciding interests, i.e. – that both Turkey and Syria are now trying to prevent the de-jure referendum from becoming an accomplished fact.

“They considered the nuclear plant construction issue, which was frozen in the wake of the Turkey-Russia confrontations. But to say that the presidents’ meeting focused on issues concerning Armenia wouldn’t be right. Turkey is facing a greater trouble today than just rendering services to Azerbaijan. Yet, that doesn’t mean the Artsakh issue is outside of Turkey’s agenda. Turkey’s foreign minister repeatedly stated that Turkey and Russia have a decision on [Nagorno-]Karabakh,” he noted.
