Turkey unlikely to complete purchase of Russian missile system, says Armenian Turkologist
The transaction which Turkey has initiated with Russia earlier this year to buy the missile system S-400 is not likely to reach its logical end, according to a Turkologist.
Speaking to Tert.am, Director of the National Academy’s Institute of Oriental Studies Ruben Safrastyan said he isn’t absolutely sure that the country will complete the procurement-related procedures to allow Russia to eventually embark on the delivery process. He cited expert opinions predicting chances that Turkey will at some point abandon the transaction.
“There are doubts that Turkey will halt the process at a certain stage,” he noted.
Earlier reports in the media said that Turkey may opt for paying Euros or the US Dollar for the system instead of the Russian Ruble.
Safrastyan noted that NATO and the United States had earlier expressed their outright discontent with Turkey’s intentions. “And that implies Turkey’s current leadership may initiate steps potentially provoking discontent also among their senior allies,” he said, citing the North-Atlantic Alliance’s earlier decision to end the weapons supply to the country.
“But I believe that apart from the military causes, there is also the specific aspect of Erdogan’s policy line as he is used to blackmailing political antagonists, as well as allies. He is virtually trying to exert pressure upon the United States, and NATO in general. Anyway, the sale of those weapons by Russia signifies an absolutely new state of affairs in the Turkey-Russia relations. This is a complicated method implying also expert assistance,” he said.
Safrastyan further highlighted the Turkish authorities' official statement denying any plans to use the Russian missile system along their their country's northern borders (i,e. – with Armenia) and direct them instead to the defense of the borders with Syria and Iraq.
“This is what we know from official statements and the Turkish press; anyway it is hard to predict at the moment where they will be deployed at all. I personally believe that they will be close to Russia’s southern border,” he added.
