US seeks further military actions in Turkey after Syria – Armenian diplomat
Turkey’s military aggression against Syria is possible but not very likely, a retired Armenian diplomat said today, predicting high chances of the United States’ further military actions on Turkey's territory.
Although the US itself has supplied weaponry to the opposition Free Syrian Army (which backs Turkey in Syria), the processes are not of a particular interest to the country, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Arman Navasardyan told reporters.
“I don’t think the United States has any final and neutral position given that their far-reaching objective is to shift the military operations to the territory of Turkey in an effort to split the country. So this is a final goal for the US. Turkey, in its turn, is attempting to mitigate its relations with the United States; its efforts at least are directed to normalizing relations with NATO,” he noted.
Addressing Russia’s position on the process, Navasardyan said he finds Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement “very vaguely worded”.
“Russia and the Damascus authorities have obviously reached a consensus over neutralizing the Kurdish movements at least in the region. So they are now combining their actions in a way.”
Meantime, the diplomat did not rule out the possibility of other scenarios. He added that Russia and Iran have now to call a conference in Sochi to invite also Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
“Russia’s main task now is to keep Assad in power. New war actions have started in the Middle East, including the devastated Syria,” he noted.
Asked whether he expects other developments given the widely perceived eccentric images of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump, Navasardyan said, “Erdogan, who is sly and flexible - as well as a very eccentric political figure – does not properly evaluate his political potential. That man wishes to be the world’s third leader and is therefore seeking for possible ways [to achieve that]. And his relations with the US are linked to a possible success through Russia,” he added.
Speaking about Trump, Navasardyan agreed that his opportunities are not equal to those of other leaders.
“In the United States, the American impeachment is the decision-maker, as well as their recently published Military Doctrine which changes the world’s political portrait when it comes to the US-Russia, US-Korea and US-Middle East relations,” he said, noting further that the geopolitical arrangement are currently against Azerbaijan.
