Azerbaijan playing ‘victim’s role’, following Ankara’s example - Edward Nalbandian
By misrepresenting the true facts behind the 1992 Khojalu events, the Azerbaijani authorities are attempting to create a victim’s image on the international arena, relying on Turkey’s example, Armenia’s foreign minister said Tuesday.
In an interview with Tert.am, Edwad Nalbandian called attention especially to the two countries’ joint anti-Armenian propaganda "aiming to shake off the burden of responsibility for past crimes."
“The slogan ‘One People, Two States’ finds its manifestation in the form of a common propaganda - voiced virtually from two different microphones. What they call Khojalu [massacre] is a propaganda tool pursuing several objectives,” he said, highlighting the strong mutual campaign against the Armenian Genocide recognition.
“By spreading trumped-up accusations alleging that the Armenians committed violence, they are trying to simply justify the century-long policy of denial. They are inventing loathsome lies to insist that the Armenians were perpetrators rather than victims. Ankara went even too far to erect a monument on the Turkish-Armenian border to symbolize the ‘massacres committed by the Armenians against the Turks’,” the minister noted.
He cited the worldwide commemoration events, dedicated to the Sumgait pogroms (committed 30 years ago), as another major concern for Turkey and Azerbaijan. “With this kind of joint steps, Ankara and Baku are virtually seeking to cast a shadow on the international resonance to those commemoration ceremonies. Baku is taking advantage of the highly-experienced Turkey's policy of denial, relying on the Turkish precedent of the April 24, 2015 Gallipoli [celebrations] in an effort to divert international attention from the Armenian Genocide centennial,” Nalbandian added.
The minister described the Azerbaijani leadership's attempts to play the victims role as a “futile effort towards gaining dividends”.
He said he also sees thorgouhly arranged steps to avoid responsibility for their own genocidal acts (against the Armenians of Sumgait and other Azerbaijani cities and towns).
The minister said he strongly believes that the Azerbaijani authorities are thus radicalizing their society “to unite them in the fight against the enemy”. “Acclaimed international organizations have repeatedly voiced concern about it. That, on the one hand, serves as a method to divert the Azerbaijani society from domestic problems and on the other hand, it is a propaganda tool against the Armenians in the conflict zone. They thus inspire a belligerent spirit in their own army by pushing them virtually to further crimes.”
Nalbandian also cited witness stories and recounts by independent journalists as a real proof unmasking the propaganda of lie. “Also. Azerbaijan’s then President [Ayaz Mutalibov] accused the Azerbaijani - rather than any Armenian - militant groups of the Khojalu civilians’ death in the internally arranged campaign for maintaining power. Azerbaijan’s attempts to avoid responsibility are absolutely useless as they will eventually face accountability measures sooner or later,” he added.
