Nagorno-Karabakh 'low priority' for EU and Russia - Nick Macfarlaine
The developments around Nagorno-Karabakh (Artskh) are unrelated to the growing tension between Russia and the European Union, according to Nick Macfarlaine, an Oxford University professor specializing in Russian foreign policy and the regional dynamics of the former Soviet Union.
“Karabakh is a low priority for both sides,” he said in an interview with Tert.am.
The expert disagreed to the remark that the OSCE Minsk Group is the only international format where Russia and the West share a common position. As a precedent, he cited the cooperation within the Arctic Council where he said “things have been going along fairly smoothly.”
Asked to comment on the concerns whether the EU-West tension may affect the peace process, Mr Macfarlane said, “The parties have given us a holiday. Since there is no obvious solution to the Karabakh problem, there is nothing to disagree about. It is not going anywhere anyway. If negotiations got serious, then we would see the disagreements appear. Since there are no serious negotiations, there is no point in expressing disagreement.”
