Clashes erupted between the police and demonstrators at the intersection connecting the Mashtots and Tumanyan avenues at 7:50 in the morning.

Several activists were taken to a police station.

Nikol Pashinyan, the leader of the opposition alliance Yelk, said the police had not resorted to violence. One of the policemen asked the opposition MP to ask the young protesters to stay calm.

But Pashinyan urged the crowd to block streets not to let people go to work. He also called for a strike in the government institutions, at the same time asking the protesters to refrain from any violence. Pashinyan also voiced a call for cordoning off the embassies.

The demonstrators finally blocked the intersection.

The policemen at the protest site asked journalists to turn to their press service for further details and comments on the reasons for aressting the activists.

Pashinyan told the journalists that their microphones had been broken or had simply disappeared. He also called for a civil disobedience campaign in the second largest city, Gyumri, and the regions of Armenia.
