April 24 marks 103rd anniversary of Armenian Genocide
Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
Crowds of people are heading to the memorial in Yerevan’s Tsitsernakaberd Park to lay flowers in commemoration of the big tragedy’s victims.
The Hamidian massacres date back to late 19th century. The governments led by Abdul Hamid and the later also the Young Turks systematically deported and annihilated the population of Western Armenia, Cilicia and other provinces of the Empire between 1892-1923. Many intellectuals were beheaded; about 600 were slaughtered when being marched into exile. An estimated 1.5 civilians - residents of 66 cities and towns and about 2,500 villages - fell victim to the pogroms. Around 2,350 churches and monasteries were looted, and some 1,500 schools and colleges - levelled to the ground.
The Paris Peace Conference, held in 1919-1920, published an official record of the estimated damages, which was 14, 510 Franks for Western Armenians and 4, 532, 472 for Eastern Armenians.
According to Ruben Safrastyan, a Turkologist and the director of the National Academy’s Institute of Oriental Studies, the international recognition of Genocide has seen regress in the recent period, especially in light of the political developments in Turkey.
“The general situation with human rights, and the reprisals in Turkey affect both the dominating atmosphere in the country, and Turkey’s position on Genocide. While in the past couple of years we saw Turkey hold different events condemning the Genocide, with different circles demonstrating a rightful approach to the iissue, I now observe an increasing pressure upon the society by the state ,” he told Tert.am.
As for the United States’ position, the expert said he doesn't observe an essential progress apart from the repeated calls by Congress. Safrastyan accounts for such a stance by the importance which the US attaches to Turkey as an ally. “Trump will never do that [recognize the Genocide],” he noted.
An important moment, he said, was the German Bundestag’s Genocide resolution adopted after the centennial.
“That state not only condemned the Genocide as a crime but also, more importantly, highlighted and condemned Germany’s role in the Armenian Genocide. The Germans themselves laid the foundations of Turkey’s policy of denial. So it was very important that the German society was able – thanks to the parties represented in Bundestag – to provide the right and just evaluation of that country’s role,” he added.
Historically, Young Turkish leaders Talaat Pasha, Cemal Pasha, Enver Pasha as well as. Behaeddin Shakir, the head of Special Organization, are known to be the main organizers of Genocide. Simultaneously, the Ottoman government perpetrated the pogroms of the Assyrian and Pontic Greeks residing in the Empire.
The Genocide recognition process dates back to the Soviet period, with Uruguay being the first state to recognize the tragedy (in 1965). So far, 27 countries have officially recognized the Armenian Genocide (in addition to different international organizations, including the EU, Council of Europe, European Movement, World Council of Churches, etc). About 200 US states and local governments of different countries have acknowledged the crime.
