Armenian government needs tougher anti-corruption strategy – economist
The Armenian government’s anti-corruption strategy needs a more comprehensive and tougher approach given that the actual corruption rate in the country is much higher than envisioned, according to an economist.
Addressing the document at a public debate on Tuesday, Vahagn Khachatryan voiced his concerns particularly of the systemic nature of the problem, which he said exists in practically all the spheres.
“This kind of abuses turn out typical to not only businessmen but the entire sector as we observe corruption risks shortly after the passage of the corresponding law,” he added.
As another major problem, Khachatryan highlighted the price generation policies, which he said are very often determined based upon individually agreed plans in Armenia. He noted that many owners of major enterprises accumulated capital thanks to close ties with the authorities over the past decades. But he admitted at the same time that the fines and duties should be within reasonable bounds to allow for applying equal mechanisms to all.
