President: We have positive outlook on Armenia’s great future
President Armen Sarkissian has shared his positive expectations for serious drastic reforms in the country, highlighting the role of the recent “velvet revolution” as a major impetus for future changes.
“The overall atmosphere in Armenia can be evaluated as good, with the changes being largely perceived in the positive light after the ‘velvet revolution’. There are really great expectations for changes for the better, so the important thing for us now is to translate them into real outcomes in our economy,” he said in an interview with the Russian RIA Novosti and Sputnik Armenia.
Sarkissian, who was in Moscow to attend the finals and the closing event of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, also highlighted the tangible advantages stemming Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union. As another important stimulus, he stressed the importance of foreign investments. “Whenever I say ‘make investments in Armenia’, it doesn’t absolutely mean I make a call for making investments in a country with a 3.5 million population. Armenia can serve as a bridge with, and gateway into, the big Eurasian area with its population of 170 million.
“What really matters nowadays is not so much the natural resources as the new technologies and procession methods. So Armenia can put the emphasis on that given that technologies do really develop fairly well in the country, attracting many international companies in the sector. Armenia can serve as a technological bridge between the conventional West and East, creating its new world-class technologies to spread them across the Eurasian market,” he added.
Sarkissian said he recently with leading international IT and HighTech companies’ representatives in France (Dassault Systèmes, Orange, THALES and Channel) to discuss possibilities for their representation on the Armenian market. “Also, jewelry-making has its firmly established traditions in Armenia, so we could combine those traditions of ours with international technologies [to develop our unique product],” he added.
Asked whether the political transition processes have encouraged more Diaspora Armenians to return to their historical homeland, the president said he sees real chances of repatriation.
“There is really a high flow [of Diaspora compatriots] at present. The projects which attract many repatriates are the prerogative of our government, i.e – the executive,” Sarkissian said, promising also his personal contribution.
Apart from an investment-friendly climate, the president stressed also the importance of an overall normal atmosphere in the country to rule out corruption and ensure the independence of the judiciary.
“Many [reforms] are now on the positive track,” he noted
“Many of the Syrian repatriates have lost home due to the war [in the country]. So they move to Armenia to start everything from a scratch here. Those people do not want to leave, because Armenia is not just a transit station for them; they want really to live here,” the president added.
