Ombudsman urges acting PM to seek European court measures to expel Azerbaijani troops from outposts close to Armenian border

Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan has submitted a letter to the acting prime minister of Armenia, stressing the need of filing an urgent complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) to demand the withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops from outposts stationed close to Armenian villages and communities along the country’s eastern border.  

In a public post on Facebook, Arman Tatoyan says he has also promised to furnish the Government with available evidence affirming the reported violations of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and justifying the urgent necessity of creating a security zone.

The ombudsman highlighted, in particular, several fundamental breaches:

1)      Right to life (Article 2 of the Convention);

2)      Right to liberty and security (Article 5);

3)      Right to respect for private and family life (Article 8);

4)      Protection of property (Article 1, Protocol I);

5)      Freedom of Movement (Article 2, Protocol 4).

The ombudsman added that the requirement applies also to the presence of Azerbaijani signboards and flags, as well as military equipment.
