Eduard Wulfson: “Holding the Khachaturian International Competition in Armenia is great homage to the composer’s work.“

“The greatness of Aram Khachaturian’s music is enclosed in its universality, diversity and intrinsic humanism. His art undoubtedly belongs to treasures of Armenian and global classical music heritage. This is what makes the Khachaturian International Competition significant for me. Besides, his music enjoys large recognition all over the world, and having the Khachaturian International Competition in Armenia is great homage to the composer’s work,” says Eduard Wulfson, a famous violinist and the Chairman of the Jury of the 18th Khachaturian International Competition.

The Khachaturian International Competition is held in the category of cello this year and, as has been the tradition, it will launch on June 6, marking the composer’s.

As stated by the Chairman of the Jury, his main expectation is distinguishing highly qualified candidates in this music competition. “Just as my fellow colleagues, I’m also impatient to welcome and listen to talented musicians, the new generation of cellists.”

Talking about the assessment criteria of the competition, Eduard Wulfson mentioned that a great emphasis will be made on the virtuosity, as well as seasoned and profound interpretations. His recommendation to the young musicians was having the sufficient technical preparedness to deliver the most emotional subtleties of the music.

Eduard Wulfson noted further that he will be visiting Armenia in June for the first time. Although the musician has never been to Armenia, he is familiar with the Armenian music: “I am acquainted with Armenian classical music and with masterpieces of such geniuses as Aram Khachaturian, Arno Babajanyan and others.”

The Khachaturian International Competition was established in 2003 and owing to its rapid growth and international recognition, it became a member of the Geneva-based World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC) in 2013. The competition aims to reveal young talented musicians and proving them with opportunities of professional growth, as well as to ensure wider promotion of Aram Khachaturian’s music worldwide.

The 18th annual competition is organized by the Aram-Khachaturian Cultural Foundation. Thanks to the supporters of the competition, the contestants were able to take part in the competition free of charge. The candidates may submit their applications by May 10, 2022.
