Azerbaijan’s military potential fuels Armenia’s anxiety – Aliyev

11:50 • 17.01.12

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev recently expressed concerns that his country’s growing military potential fuels Armenia’s anxiety.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting recently, Aliyev slammed Armenia for what he called a non-constructive approach to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, that led to a failure to achieve a progress in the peace settlement settlement talks.

“Azerbaijan is increasing its military potential. Our military expenses grew from $3.413 bn in 2010 to 3.474 m in 2011. Our army is now capable of doing a lot. We have the most powerful army in the region,” he said, according to the Azerbaijani news agency APA.

A deputy foreign minister of Azerbaiajn, Araz Azimov, had voiced expressed concerns that Armenia, with its population 3 million, has 71,000 military personnel, whereas Azerbaijan, whose population is 8.6 million, has only 63,000 servicemen in its armed forces.
