Armenian oppositionist positive on parliamentary minority’s cooperation plan
In an interview with Tert.am, Head of the Heritage parliamentary group Rubik Hakobyan said the cooperation between the four non-coalition parliamentary forces (in dealing with the funded pensions, gas price and Armenia’s $300m debt) shows they are well-aware of every step of theirs.
Mr Hakobyan, what’s your opninion on the first meeting that discussed the issue of passing a vote of no confidence in Armenia’s government?
It has been an effective working meeting of the non-coalition forces. We discussed the issue of passing a vote of no confidence in the government. Each of the parliamentary groups presented its draft. So we have four drafts on the table. And they must be discussed not only in Parliament, but also by our parties. They will be combined. We specified our positions, and a new working meeting is going to take place in the coming few days. I think we, the four groups, are going to present a joint draft.”
Will the four groups’ drafts be essentially different from each other?
I should note that we have specified the following principle, which is most important before we reach a definitive agreement. We are not saying anything about similarities or differences. Some forces will try to make use of even seeming inconsistencies to oppose the four non-coalition forces, prevent their cooperation. All the four forces are concerned about further activities in this format.”
How do you evaluate the chances?
I consider the chances satisfactory as of today. I cannot make a final evaluations for the future, but I consider them positive as far as the upcoming developments and the cooperation are concerned.
You are probably aware that the RPA [the ruling Republican Party of Armenia] says gloatingly that nothing will turn out.
I look upon it as quite a normal process, because this is a political campaign which has its own technologies. It’s natural for the RPA to make gloating remarks and try – through all the media outlets – question this cooperation and oppose these forces. We simply have an immune system, I think - at least for the time being – to oppose to those steps. We understand they have to try to develop a non-positive opinion on this. So it is for us to prove that we continue the cooperation as it stems from a public demand.
Do you realize the message in the chess language, which says, “if you touch a piece, you must move it somewhere”? So if this question fails after you touch it, that will be a common fiasco.
This short track record of our cooperation over the [pension] accumulation funds, the gas price and the $300 million debt proved that we very well understand what we do, and most importantly, we know that our cooperation stems from the wide public demand which, I think, will ensure our future cooperation.
Another important remark: most questions we include in our common agenda are really dictated by the public. No wonder the public initiatives are now joining us to offer support; or we join their initiatives. Hence we are in a situation that sees the society or at least a large part of it center on very important issues. And that’s the only guarantee to ensure our success.
