Lake Sevan under major threat as flow from contaminated river waters continues
Lake Sevan has only five to ten years to live, environmentalists warn amid rising concerns over the impact of poor quality river waters flowing into the lake.
According to the environmental NGO Ecolur, the water coming from the Masrik river was found to be the the most harmful as of July 2014.
Speaking to Tert.am, environmentalist Silva Adamyan said she believes that poor-quality water is the only problem.
“Sewage water flows into Lake Sevan, so we have serious problems involving the water level: poor-quality water flowing into the lake, cleaning of the bottom and beaches,” she noted.
The lake will turn into a marsh in five years if the attitude to Lake Sevan does not change.
The environmentalists pointed out three important factors as major concerns: cleaning the bottom, raising the water level and natural breeding fish in Lake Sevan.
“However, we do not see the problems are being dealt with,” she said.
As to the contaminated rivers, Ms Adamyan said, “Some rivers flow by mines, others are polluted with sewage waters, and all this flows into Lake Sevan. This problem has repeatedly been raised, but mining continues. This causes serious problems for entire Armenia.”
Seyran Minasyan of the Institute of Chemical Physics believes that the quality of water in Lake Sevan does not meet the requirements in 50-60 percent of cases.
“At present, it is not as clean as it was before. And it will hardly ever be. Over 20 contaminated rivers flow into the lake. That is barbarism.”
Minasyan said the pressure on the lake is high, with no purification being stations around. “The second quality water is very bad, but it has to be excellent in those zones,” he said. “I hoped Sevan would resist it for 10 years, but 60 percent of the water appeared to be of third and fourth quality as of May. If this continues, we have to forget about the fish in Sevan in ten years,” he noted.
Environmentalist Hakob Sanasaryan attributed the problem to the authorities’ poor attention which he said is not likely to save the lake from the semi-alive condition of continued.
The environmentalist said he is under the impression that the authorities are either absolutely unaware of the problem or are just implementing another program. “We will have no more pure lakes soon; they will be contaminated with heavy metals. Such a policy will soon cause our lands too to be contaminated with heavy metals too,” he added.
