Armenia interested in developing cooperation with BSEC - parliament official
The vice speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly has expressed the country’s interest in developing cooperation with the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) member states.
In his opening speech at the 43rd session of the organization’s Committee on Cultural, Educational and Social Affairs, Eduard Sharmazanov highlighted the importance of enhancing the cooperation format in an effort to ensure sustainability and welfare in the region.
“It is important for the organization to react to the vital interests of all the member states. For Armenia, it has first of all to do with lifting the closed border with Turkey.
“The unsettled Armenian-Turkish relations and Europe’s last closed border continue to remain a vulnerable component of pan-European security. Paradoxically though it is, Turkey, which aspires for EU membership, has sealed the border of the neighboring state.
“The April 24 1915 arrest and annihilation of 600 Armenian intellectuals – writers, painters, artists, doctors, members of the Ottoman parliament and public figures – marked the beginning of the pre-arranged and state-orchestrated atrocity which history admits as the 20th century’s first Genocide. I would like to extend my word of gratitude to the states, organizations and individuals who have lent a helping hand to us at the time of tragedy, recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide. A crime of genocide has no limitation period, and in the run-up of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, I once again stress the importance of the unprecedented atrocity’s recognition and condemnation by the international community.
“Turkey, which aspires for EU membership, keeps avoiding a confrontation with its past, evading responsibility and continuing extorting history with its decades-long policy of denial,” he said.
Speaking further of regional cooperation, Sharmazanov emphasized the importance of preserving cultural values, especially the monuments that are internationally significant.
“Cultural diversity and the preservation and protection of monuments are important especially for the peoples whose monuments are beyond their own state borders, scattered around the globe and especially in our region,” he said.
In that context, the parliament vice speaker condemned the continuing desecration of the Armenian cultural heritage on the territory of Turkey and Azerbaijan.
He called for international efforts to condemn the vandalism, considering it a crime against universal Christian values.
“Although, the organization’s activities are largely targeted at economic cooperation, I am sure that the cooperation will help ensure more favorable conditions for resolving the existing political and other problems in the region,” he added.
The two-day summit, which opened in Yerevan on Tuesday, has brought together officials and different representatives from BSEC member states.
