Hysteria and painful perception of truth – Comments on Azerbaijan’s reaction to Ukraine TV channel’s Karabakh broadcast
Azerbaijan’s violent reaction to a Ukrainian TV channel’s broadcast on Nagorno-Karabakh is seen by many in Armenia as a manifestation of hysteria and a painful perception of truth.
According to the Armenian service of RFE/RL (Azatutyun.am), the country has blacklisted the authors of the broadcast for featuring the second Armenian republic as a non-Azerbaijani territory. It claimed that the journalists (Dmitry Volkov and Konstantin Andriyuk) who prepared the footage for the Channel 1+1 misrepresented the history behind the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Speaking to Tert.am, film director Arshak Zakaryan described the Azerbaijanis’ reaction as an attempt to attract the world’s attention to every single minutia regarding their country. He said he very much regrets that Armenia does not follow suit. “Of course, we put ourselves in an awkward position, as we do everything unconsciously. The arguments they bring are always denied, but as a representative of the opposing side, I can say that it characterizes them in the positive light,” he said, stressing the importance of active steps by Armenia.
Describing the journalists blacklisting as a disgraceful act, Zakaryan said he thinks that Armenia must by all means raise its voice its protest against the move. “The broadcast has already been watched by everybody, so by kicking up a fuss, they only raised its rating. And if there were people in Ukraine who hadn’t watched the broadcast, they will do so following this fuss,” he noted.
The director said he doesn’t think that Armenia has anything to say about the footage which featured deplorable facts about the country. “Silence very often is more preferable. And what we have to do in this case is just to laugh it off and point to the disgrace and hysteria they stage. But the truth, of course, is really painful.”
Political scientist Sergey Minasyan believes that Azerbaijan is always nervous about Nagorno-Karabakh, especially about visits there. It is logical because Azerbaijan has no means of control.
“Since Ukraine and Azerbaijan maintain military-technical and economic relations, this hysteria may be even fostered in Ukraine. But our diplomacy has to work and prevent it,” he said.
With respect to the content of the film, Mr Minasyan noted that Armenian diplomacy had done its work.
“I think that our ministry of Foreign Affairs should be more active because of the factor of freedom of the speech, which is said to exist in Ukraine and needs protecting. It is clear that such a high-quality film would not have been created without Armenian and Nagorno-Karabakh government bodies’ help.”
Expert in Azerbaijani studies Sargis Asatryan believes that Azerbaijan’s reaction to Nagorno-Karabakh shown as not part of Azerbaijan was natural. Azerbaijan is furious about such a report by a Ukrainian TV channel.
“That is, ‘why should we support Ukraine, and it attack us from the rear?’”
As regards the content, Mr Asatryan said that the reality is painful, “especially for Azerbaijan.”
