Genocide recognition is more in Turkey’s interests – Victor Yengibaryan
In an interview with Tert.am, President of European Movement-Armenia Victor Yengibaryan shared his comments on the European Movement International’s recent resolution on the Armenian Genocide, as well as the ceremonies marking the big tragedy’s centennial.
Mr Yengibaryan, European Movement International recognized the Armenian Genocide in accordance with the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crimes of Genocides. We are also aware that the summit was attended also by a delegation from Turkey? How will you comment on the fact that the resolution was adopted unanimously.
Turkey’s delegation made a decision to take part in the summit at the very last moment, after they knew we had submitted a resolution on the Armenian Genocide. They naturally proposed certain changes which, even though would recognize the Genocide, would distort and lose the entire document’s value, enabling the Turkish opponents to accuse Turkey of unawareness. To be frank - even though all this is on a public level - I see first of all the Turkish propaganda’s “ears” standing behind all this. What’s even more, the Turks were also lobbying for such distorting changes in the European Parliament’s resolution.
The European partners lacked the necessary knowledge to understand such subtleties; hence it was obviously difficult for them to find distortions behind the lines.
On the other hand, there was a big pressure on both us and the Turks in terms of finding a consensus-based decision. In honor of our European partners, especially the Turks, we nonetheless managed - as a result of two-day negotiations, speeches and questions and answers - to pave way for the truth and obtain a document which fully reflects the truth.
Can the document be said to be pro-Armenian nonetheless, and what are your general comments on the 100th anniversary events?
In the classical sense – as it is common to say in Armenia – yes. But a deeper insight would reveal that a recognition of the Genocide is more in the interests of Turkey, rather than Armenia today. For a century now, the Turkish state has been keeping its society in taboos and disinformation, which will sooner or later have its boundaries broken through, posing a serious threat to the Turkish authorities, state and probably – national identity. The sooner the Turks find the courage to look upon [past] errors with open eyes, the better for both themselves and us, as well as the world.
As for the centennial events, my comments on the recognition of Genocide by numerous states, the Holy See [of Vatican] and international organizations and the international media’s criticism against the Turks is reflected in once sentence: the centennial movement was so strong and so well-organized, so balanced and so much to the point that “the Armenian Cause became an issue for Turkey.”
