Armenia-Turkey reconciliation may be fruitful in case of society involvement – German ambassador
The reconciliation efforts between Armenia and Turkey may yield a result in case the two countries’ societies are engaged in the process, Germany’s ambassador to Armenia said today, commenting on the potentials of a fruitful dialogue between the two countries.
Matthias Kiesler made the remark at a news conference in Yerevan after a public event dedicated to the project “Acting Together”, an initiative aimed to promote a bilateral rapprochement. It was introduced by DVV International, the Institute for International Cooperation of the Deutscher Volkshochschul-Verband.
“The German Government and DVV International have been cooperating for many years, and this cooperation has been very important for Armenia,” the diplomat said, thanking the other initiators.
“Like the previous project, ‘Talking to Each Other’, ‘Acting Together’ too, is being organized to enable the youth in the two countries to spend time together talking about episodes of history.”
The ambassador said he believes that knowledge of history should extend beyond textbook information to become a personalized perception.
He further referred to the 2009 bilateral protocols (aimed at establishing a diplomatic dialogue and opening the border between the two countries) which were later recalled by President Serzh Sargsyan. “The process was suspended for reasons known to you all. Nonetheless, we find that the dialogue has to be maintained on the political level,” Mr Kiesler said, reiterating his country’s position. “I am deeply convinced that diplomatic efforts alone are not enough for a success, as reconciliation can yield results only when the two countries’ societies are involved in the process.”
The first phase of the project is financed by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its partners are the Armenian demographic research center Hazarashert (Director: Hranush Kharatyan) and the Turkish Historical Society.
It is a multi-layer initiative whose key component is a proposal for joint voyages across Armenia and Turkey by the two countries’ youths.
So far, ten young people from each country have conducted trips, visiting Armenia’s religious capital, Echmiadzin, the second largest city, Gyumri, and the town Talin (Aragatsotn region).
“It’s practically an exhibition [whose samples] we collect throughout our journey, as we visit different places where we can listen to human stories, as well as pick up pictures and items that people would like us to showcase. And all this is a kind of way of telling stories about the Genocide and the present-day realities,” he added.
