Eurasian Union best recourse for Russia against US sanctions – analyst

12:30 • 31.07.17

The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), of which Armenia is a member, can offer Russia the best safeguards against the new sanctions imposed by the US, according to a political analyst.

Speaking at a news conference, Stepan Grigoryan, Chairman at the Board of the Analytical Center on Globalization and Regional Cooperation, said he expects Russia to protect only its own interests in the current circumstances without offering any aid to Armenia.

But he ruled out any impact upon the country.

“We speak so many times about democracy, and what we see in the United States today is a classical example of democracy. The President who came to power was [Donald] Trump who pursued his own views, but the president’s views are not shared by the parliament and even members of his own party. And so they imposed sanctions upon Russia,” he noted.

Grigoryan said he now expects Russia to establish also its own game rules as possible mechanisms of defense. “In retaliation against those sanctions, Russia will introduce new game rules through the EEU. When Russia made the changes in the law on driving licenses, banning drivers with Armenian licenses from work, Russia took the right step from their own perspective, protecting the labor [rights] of their own people. So Russians will now work instead of our drivers,” he noted.

The expert said he doesn’t think Russia will now pay too much attention to the EEU amid the deteriorating socio-economic conditions in their country. He described the recent legislative changes as a challenge to Armenia.

As an effective counter-reaction against the Russian authorities’ tightening policies, Grigoryan proposed developing a new culture in Armenia to protect only the country’s own interests. “Whatever is good for the United States or Russia is not necessarily expected to be good also for Armenia,” he added.
