Turkey-Armenia protocols ‘dead’ in essence – expert
14:18 • 14.12.17

Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian’s recent statement on declaring the Turkey-Armenia protocols null and void reflect the de-facto reality we are facing today, according to a Turkologist.
“Those protocols are dead documents in essence as they exist only formally. Hence, logically, they must be declared null and void until the coming spring,” Ruben Safarastyan, the director of the National Academy’s Institute of Oriental studies, told reporters.
The expert highlighted the changes in the Turkish politics which he said has now gained a considerable importance. In his words, the country ‘overworked’ in the ill-fated process of establishing a dialogue with Armenia in an attempt to impose concessions over Nagorno-Karabakh.
“Their move to block the chances of normalizing relations is also part of those pressures, which they now exercise very successfully. Yet, we see that Turkey’s steps to be part of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement process do not yield any result. We see that the preconditions they have set for normalizing relations won’t be accepted by Armenia,” he added.
Safrastyan said he also sees that Turkey’s reputation is sinking lower and lower under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s rule. “He is an unpredictable leader. I am confident his reputation has sunk low in the West, and also in the Arab World. Turkey has become isolated because of this kind of policies. And that means their potential of exerting pressure upon Armenia have weakened too,” he said.
