Baku must return to constructive dialogue over Karabakh – Nalbandian

15:20 • 27.03.18

To promote future progress over Nagorno-Karabakh (Aertsakh), Azerbaijan must return to a constructive dialogue, abandoning its belligerent rhetoric and use of force, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said Tuesday.

At a news conference with Jean Asselborn, Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs, Armenia's top diplomat expressed his criticism of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’ statements describing the entire process as meaningless and illogical.

“Baku made repeated calls for conducting meaningful, substantive or logical negotiations as though these negotiations were devoid of any meaning or logic. Why then did their president attend over two dozen meetings on the top level if they were really meaningless or illogical?” he asked.

Nalbandian further slammed the Azerbaijani leader for his recently voiced threats to “return” Yerevan and Armenia’s south-east.  He said that he can only assume that the reasoning behind that kind of statement could be his belief that the existing proposals are too primitive and lacking a creative element. “That is to say, they consider themselves entitled to evaluate which proposals could be creative in essence. The important thing for them now is to get rid of those ‘linguistic maneuvers’ and return to a constructive dialogue,” he said, adding that the country keeps disrespecting its commitments in the peace talks.

Nalbandian also addressed the Armenian Genocide recognition issue, calling for international efforts to fight its continuing denial. “The first thing I would like to mention is the symbolic moment that our nation, which survived the Genocide and threat of extermination, was nevertheless reborn, becoming what the international community calls an advocate in the worldwide campaign for the prevention of genocides and crimes against humanity, ” he noted.

“Our initiative this year deals with the 70th anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention [and Punishment of the Crime] of Genocide (adopted on December 9, 1948). You are certainly aware that [Polish-Jewish historian] Raphael Lemkin is one of its authors. He coined the term ‘genocide’ back in 1944, referring particularly to the genocide of the Armenians,” the minister added.
