French President Emmanuel Macron Macron has promised to declare April 24 as a day of Armenian Genocide remembrance in his country.

Macron announced his decision on Tuesday as he met with members of the French-Armenian Coordinating Council for an annual dinner event.

"France is, first and foremost, the country that knows how to look history in the face, which was among the first to denounce the killing of the Armenian people, which in 1915 named genocide for what it was, which in 2001 after a long struggle recognised it in law," France 24 quotes him as saying.

Macron also used the chance to criticize Turkey for the continuing policy of denial, reports the Russian news agency TASS. “Only one country, Turkey - in the person of its leader - rejects sharing the views of France, and our values in that context,” he said, agreeing at the same time that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is not the only representative of the Turkish nation.

The French leader promised to continue the dialogue “to make the historical facts heard”. “I put it clearly today – as we are holding a peace forum – that the president of the Republic of France has a full responsibility to invite the president of Turkey to a dialogue,” he added.
