The European Union is willing to assist the Armenian authorities in implementing judiciary and legal reforms, Ambassador Piotr Switalski said today, commenting on the current processes in the sector.

Speaking at a news conference, the head of the EU mission reiterated European Council President Donald Tusk's earlier promise to provide the necessary support to the current government's efforts towards creating an independent, honest and effectively functioning judiciary. “We are ready to provide political, advisory and financial assistance,” he said, affirming also a willingness to offer measurable financial assets.

The diplomat said they are considering assistance in two formats: direct and indirect, and a multi-million worth project for the couple of years to come. In his words, the mission is looking forward to the plans outlined currently by the Armenian government.

Meantime, Switalski amitted that the Union is not imposing any model or relying on a single specific format as the only effectively functioning one.  “There are problems also in the EU family; hence the EU is not absolutely imposing anything [on Armenia]. But we are ready to offer counselling, to mobilize the expert potential and to share experience,” he added.

Addressing the opposition’s criticism accusing the incumbent authorities of attempts to create a non-independent judiciary system, Switalski stressed the importance of respecting the country’s Constitution and the international commitments and standards (in realizing the reforms). He called for adequate steps towards creating real independent courts free from any unnecessary intervention and ensuring the separation of the branches of power. The diplomat said he does not presently see any concerns in terms of intentional attempts to undermine the judiciary.
