Armenian president promises retaliation for cross-border violence
The borderline incidents amounting to acts of provocation are extremely dangerous, and they are sure to meet retaliation, President Serzh Sargsyan has said in an interview with Panorama.am.
“I have always said that the acts of sabotage on the Line of Contact are extremely dangerous. I have also said that they will get a severe response. The incidents over the past days are an evidence of that,” he said.
The president noted that the provocations might have either been instructed by the Azerbaijani leadership, or resulted from the military command’s weakened control over the armed forces. In the former case, he called for the Azerbaijani authorities’ personal responsibility for the incidents while for the latter case, he stressed the importance of the Armenian forces’ readiness to meet individual field commanders (vs. organized troops) from the enemy’s army.
“We have no reason to resort to armed violence as we consider negotiations the only way towards settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. And such settlement has to enable the people of Artsakh to exercise their right to self-determination. To move forward with the settlement, it is necessary – as the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs have repeatedly said – to prepare the population for peace. The Azerbaijani side keeps acting in the opposite manner, considering the encouragement of xenophobia a tool to distract people’s attention from domestic problems,” said the president.
Sargsyan noted that the Azerbaijani-perpetrated violence coincided in time aspect with the Armenian and Azerbaijani intellectuals’ Moscow-hosted meeting aimed at strengthening confidence building measures, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s regional visit to the South Caucasus.
“We are not willing to exacerbate the situation, but we will not fail to provide a response to any act [of violence] against our citizens, state borders, and Nagorno-Karabakh. The Republic of Armenia Armed Forces have been strictly instructed to demonstrate restraint and vigilance, at the same time preventing and retaliating any provocation by the enemy. I am sure that the international community and the population of Azerbaijan understand who should have the victims’ blood on his conscience,” he added.
