168 Zham: Europe ‘closely following’ developments in pre-electoral Armenia

11:40 • 15.11.18

Europe is closely following the pre-electoral developments in Armenia, looking forward to a political stability after the new parliament’s formation, Konrad Zasztowt, an expert at the Polish Institute of International Affairs, said in a recent interview with the paper.

According to him, the existing high-level interest is linked to mutual programs currently on the EU-Armenia agenda.

Zasztowt said that the EU has not observed progress in any of the joint programs - apart from the reported activities and changes stemming from the implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership agreement (CEPA).  The expert highlighted the EU’s interest in a sustainably continuing cooperation, stressing the importance of respecting timeframes outlined in the bilateral programs.

But he ruled out any foreign policy changes in the post-electoral period, warning instead of avoiding “undesired errors”.

Zasztowt called for embarking on serious work after the December 9 election “to clarify the foreign policy vectors “ in the face of different partners’ expectations.

Meantime he admitted that Armenia needs a sound opposition to ensure the viability of its political arena.

The Moscow-based political analyst Alexander Skakov commented upon the Armenian-Russian relations which he said face, time and again, “mutual understanding errors”. “Yet, there isn’t any alternative to the Armenian-Russian partnership relations,” he told the paper.
